When You Don’t Know What to Do

“I will instruct you and show you the way to go, with my eye on you, I will give counsel.”

Psalms 32:8 CSB

Hey mama!

One of the most frustrating things for me as a mama is not knowing what to do when a situation arises and the direction that I should take isn’t laid out in a clear-cut plan. I get tangled up in knots that I can’t function in even the simplest of things.

And, when this happens and frustration hits me like a bowling ball it’s easy for me to forget that I need to seek God for a clear path. Do you ever struggle with this?

However, I’m learning that during these moments, I must take time out to pray and turn to God’s word for wise counsel. I can try with all my might to navigate through the weeds of my emotions but without God’s help, I just get further and further tangled up in knots.

When I finally do turn to God for help then I seem to run into another issue. Sometimes I don’t know if it is really Him speaking or just my own thoughts which is frustrating as well!  Can you relate?

Here is a list to refer to when you are frustrated over which direction to take and are left wondering if you heard God correctly in your situation:

  1. Does it agree with Scripture? – God’s voice will never contradict His Word. If what you are hearing goes against what you read in the Bible, then steer clear of what you are hearing outside of what the Bible says. God’s word is the absolute truth in any situation and should always be our compass and guide.

  2. Is the Holy Spirit confirming it? – I call it my mama’s intuition but it’s actually more than just a feeling that you get - In other words, “do you have an inner witness?” Romans 8:16 says that if you are a believer then you have an inner witness called the Holy Spirit. It’s a “know that you know that you know” kind of thing.

  3. Do you have peace in your spirit? – We can have peace in our spirit even when everything around us is spinning out of control. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.” One of the ways God gives confirmation is through the peace He gives during the most unsteady moments.

  4. Have you received confirmation? – A confirmation is when God says the exact same thing more than once in a different way. Whether you hear it from a sermon, song, devotion material, etc., it’s the exact same message sent to you by God – just in different routes.

  5. Have you received Godly counsel? – Have you reached out to your Pastor or a wise- Christian woman for Godly counsel? – One rule of thumb here is for that person to not just give you their opinion but to seek out what the Bible says.

  6. What would Jesus do? My pastor said something that has stuck with me and made an impact more than anything else. He said, “Mimic the Father” In other words, do what your Heavenly Father would do.

  7. Are you willing to wait on God? – Sometimes we jump too soon because we are impatient, but God’s timing is always perfect.

God,

Thank you for providing me with the necessary tools to know how to handle certain situations. Thank you for helping me to see how to know if I have heard from you or if my direction is coming from somewhere else. You are so good to provide for my every need. Forgive me of all the times that I try to do this thing called life on my own without you. I need you to direct my steps every single day. Thank you for never letting me go. In Jesus Name. Amen.
