When the Unknown Comes Calling

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV

Trust.

Do you ever find yourself in a wrestling match with this small five-letter word? Like you are in a big life-size game of Jenga and at any moment, something could change that would pull out the “block” that was holding everything together and you find yourself standing in the aftermath of it all?

Well, I do all the time and I will be the first to tell you that it is downright difficult. It is one of the most difficult things I have had to do here lately.

How do you trust when you can’t see the outcome? How do you trust when you don’t know what tomorrow holds? How do you trust when you get unbearable news that knocks the wind out of your sails?

Friend, I’m not going to lie or sugarcoat it. Trusting when the unknown comes calling is hard. Proverbs 3:5-6 says ““Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Yes, it is super difficult, but it is imperative that we do exactly as God’s word says. See, when we take it upon ourselves to lean on our own understanding, we can lead ourselves away from God’s best. It’s easy for us to rationalize out any situation but God says just to trust, and He will make our paths straight.

Trusting begins with a choice. It may not be easy, but if I choose to trust Him even when I don’t know the outcome, it gets me out of the driver's seat and hands the reins back over to God – where they belong.

We must not forget the character of our God. He can be trusted.

Psalm 86:15 says, “But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.”

It may still not be easy, but when we focus on God’s character, we line ourselves up to trust Him even in the unknown. One of my favorite quotes by Corrie Ten Boom is “ Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” I love this quote! It takes the pressure off of me to try to handle and fix it all. I’ll gladly leave that up to the One who knows what He is doing because I certainly don’t.

So, friend, I’m not sure what unknown has knocked the wind out of your sail today, but I want to encourage you to trust your Father, with all your heart. Give Him your concerns and worries and allow Him to carry you today. There is peace when we run to Him.

That is what He wants to do - Carry us both!

Heavenly Father,

Thank you for reminding me that I can trust you in the unknown – no matter how scary it is. Forgive me of all the times when I haven’t given you my burdens. Please show me how I can lean on you more rather than my own understanding. I love you Lord. In Jesus Name, Amen.
