Calm In the Midst of the Raging Sea

“He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still! The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Mark 4:39 CSB

Do you ever have moments where you are faced with a storm that completely took you by surprise? It seemed like life was going smoothly and you were just rocking along just doing your thing. Then out of nowhere you are hit between the eyes with the biggest storm you have ever faced, completely caught off guard and wondering how in the world you are going to make it? If you have ever felt this way, please know that you are not alone. This scenario that I described has happened to me more times than I can count.

These massive storms that I have walked through mostly came with no warning and have popped up not only in my marriage but in life in general leaving nothing but miles and miles of devastating debris to mark its path. It can leave a soul battered and weary. If this is where you are right now, standing in the path of destruction from a storm of life that leaves you wondering how you are going to ever recover, I want to encourage you that there is a calm amid the powerful winds and the raging sea. That calm is Jesus.

The disciples found themselves in a situation where they were just doing their thing and a storm came out of nowhere and they were beyond afraid. They were even beyond terrified. They couldn’t see how they were even going to make it out alive because the storm was so powerful. And to top it off, they were upset with Jesus because He was asleep. It seemed as if He just didn’t care about their plight. The struggle was real.

Mark 4:39 tells us that “He got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still! The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Friend, all Jesus had to do was speak to the storm and it obeyed and there was a great calm. There wasn’t just a little bit of peace. Nope. There was great peace. Jesus still has the same authority over the storm as He did when He was faced with the storm in the boat. Nothing has changed to diminish His power and authority. He’s still the same God today as He was back then.

If you feel the power of the storm and if the struggle is real for you too – call out to the One who speaks to the storm – Call out to Jesus – He truly is the calm in the midst of the storm.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus – oh, Jesus, there is something truly wonderful about your name. Your name is power. Your name is healing. Your name is truly life-giving. Thank you for being a God that calms the storms in every area of my life. You speak and the winds and waves must obey your command. I praise You for being my calm when the ground is shaky under my feet. Keep my eyes on you Jesus. When I take my eyes off of you then I start to sink – thank you for being the one that holds me together. Thank you for rescuing me and for loving me beyond comprehension. In Jesus name. Amen.
