Praying Scripture over our children
“Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.”
Matthew 7:7
God speaks to us through many different avenues. Sometimes it’s through a song, sermon, or through a friend. However, mostly He speaks to us through His word. But how do we speak to God? It’s not like we can just pick up the phone or stop by to see him – right?! Prayer is how we talk to God. It’s our phone line to Heaven – It’s our lifeline and it is dynamite when combined with God’s word. As mama’s, the single most important thing we can do is teach our children the importance of having a relationship with Jesus and develop within them the necessary tools to fight life’s battles the correct way – through God’s word and prayer. And the best way to teach them is to model it ourselves.
One of the best ways to pray for our children is to pray scripture over them. Sometimes it’s easy to just look at the Bible as if it’s old and not relevant. We find ourselves seeking out every other avenue before we search out the Bible. We tend to google the issue or look for answers elsewhere. I’m preaching to my own self here – I’m so guilty of this!
However, it’s imperative that we seek God’s word first and not be afraid to personalize it. God tells us in Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you.” Dear friend – it’s there for the taking – all we must do is ask, seek, and knock.
Make sure to insert your child’s name or a particular struggle they are experiencing and don’t forget to keep a journal of personalized scripture prayers for your child. This is so helpful for having a record of prayer over your child to be able to go back through and witness how God has moved in their lives.
Here are a few to get you started…
Read 2 Corinthians 5:17. Write out this verse as a proclamation over your child – speak it out loud over your child. “Name of your child” is in Christ and he/she is a new creation….” Etc.
Write out Romans 8:15-17 as a proclamation to the enemy of your child’s soul. Inform him that your child has an unshakeable inheritance that comes from the Lord.
Read Galatians 5:1 – underline it. Write it as a prayer over yourself and your child making sure to insert your names. – Personalize it.
Write out Proverbs 2:1-7 as a prayer for your child. ”Dear God, I pray that “name of child” will listen and receive your word. I pray that “name of child” will treasure your word and your commands within him/her….etc.”
Read Matthew 6:13 – underline or highlight it in your Bible. Write this scripture out as a prayer for your child. Don’t forget to personalize it.
Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 and underline it in your Bible. Write it out as a prayer over your child making sure to personalize it. “Jesus, I pray that “name of child” will overflow with the kind of love that suffers long and is kind….etc.”
Can you just imagine what all will transpire in our children’s lives, not to mention our lives, when we take seriously praying scripture over our children? I firmly believe it will blow our minds!
Dear God,
Thank you for reminding me that I need to specifically be praying scripture over my children. Your word is alive, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword. Your word is the very best thing that I can pray over my children. Help me to lead by example, modeling to both what it looks like to seek you in all things. I love you, In Jesus name, Amen.
